ctrlhq

Near me search

Coffee near me, without opening Maps.

Type "coffee near me" in ctrlhq's power bar and nearby places from Apple Maps show up, with ratings and hours beside them.

Shortcut ⌘⇧Space

Looking up a café or a pharmacy shouldn't mean opening Maps, waiting for it to load and typing the search again.

Press ⌘⇧Space, type "coffee near me" and ctrlhq lists the closest places from Apple Maps, each with its distance and address. Return opens the place in Maps, and ⌘Return asks Maps for directions.

It works with a pin or postal code too: "hotels near 440022" or "pizza near 94103" searches around that area instead of where you are.

NEARBY

  • Blue Bottle Coffee180 m · 1 Ferry Building
  • Sightglass Coffee450 m · 270 7th St
  • Philz Coffee650 m · 201 Berry St

Places and their ratings come from Apple Maps. Return opens one in Maps.

What you get

  • Apple Maps results

The same places, categories and addresses you'd get in Maps, from Apple's own search. No account and no API key.

  • Say it how you'd say it

"coffee near me", "pharmacy nearby", "near me ramen" or "map apple store". The best and good fall away, so Maps gets the thing you want.

  • Pin and postal codes

"hotels near 440022", "pubs near SW1A 1AA": a code searches around that area, anywhere in the world.

  • Distance at a glance

Each result shows how far it is and its street, so you can pick without opening anything.

  • Ratings, hours and photos

Apple's own place card opens beside the bar for the first result: ratings, opening hours, photos, phone and website, wherever Apple Maps has them. ↑ and ↓ move it to the next place.

  • Look up any place

"place Off The Charts Manteca" finds a place by name, anywhere in the world, with its place card beside it.

  • Open or get directions

Return shows the place in Apple Maps. ⌘Return opens directions from where you are.

  • Your location stays yours

ctrlhq asks for Location the first time you search. Your searches and location go to Apple, never to us. Without Location, results are around your internet provider's city.

Questions

How do I search for places near me on a Mac?

With ctrlhq, press ⌘⇧Space and type something like "coffee near me". Nearby places from Apple Maps appear under the field, with distance and address. Without ctrlhq, open the Maps app and search there.

Does it need my location?

It works best with it. The first time you search, macOS asks whether ctrlhq can use your location. If you say no, results are centred on your internet provider's city, which can be a few kilometres off.

Can I search around a pin code or postal code?

Yes. "hotels near 440022", "pizza near 94103" or "cafes near M5V 3L9" searches around that area instead of where you are.

Does it show ratings and reviews?

Yes. Apple's place card opens beside the bar for the highlighted place, with its ratings, opening hours and photos, wherever Apple Maps has them. Coverage depends on the area: it's richest in the US and Europe. ← or Esc hides it.

Can I look up a specific place?

Yes. Type place and its name, like "place Off The Charts Manteca", and ctrlhq finds it on Apple Maps with its place card, wherever it is.

Is it free?

Yes. It uses Apple Maps' search, which is part of macOS, so there's no account, no key and no extra cost. Turn it off any time in Settings › Integrations.
